Can My Home Really Be Fixed After a Flood?

Summarize with

Did your home recently flood? Get the help you need with a flood restoration Portland company.

Has your area been recently hit hard with rain? If so, you’ve likely had part of your home flood. While flooding in your home is nothing to take lightly, restoring your home isn’t an impossible task, either. Through the process of flood restoration, you can get your home back to where it was. So, yes, you can really fix your home after a flood. Today we’re going to take a look at how a flood restoration Portland service can get your home back to normal.

Why Do I Need Flood Restoration?

Before we get into the step-by-step process of how flood restoration works, let’s talk about why you need it. First, you should have a flood restoration performed on your home to deal with the water damage that can occur with a flood. Water damage not only causes stains, but it can lead to a weakening of structural integrity in walls, ceilings, and floors that need to be addressed immediately.

The other reason is that you should do whatever it takes to prevent the growth of mold. Mold isn’t just dirty grime. It can spread spores through your home and lead to serious health issues for your and your loved ones if they’re not properly addressed.

What Goes into Flood Restoration?

Now that we’ve addressed why you need to have flood restoration performed on your home, here’s a breakdown of how the process goes and what should be done to properly deal with one:

Hire a Professional

First and foremost, don’t try to do this yourself. There are several hazardous steps when it comes to performing flood restoration. You’re much better off hiring a professional who can handle the situation and keep you safe rather than risking yourself or your loved ones by trying to handle it all yourself. Plus, a professional is going to make sure that the job is done correctly.

Shut off the Power

Your power needs to be shut off. This keeps the water in the basement from being electrified, but also helps prevent serious electrical issues from occurring. Don’t try to do this yourself at the risk of electrocuting yourself. This is why you should call in a pro.

Remove Excess Water from the Area

The next step is to get all of the excess water out from the area. This is typically done by using a water pump to remove everything. A shop vac can also come in handy for any remaining water that the pump was unable to remove.

Remove Water-Damaged Materials

For this next step, it’s important to remove anything and everything you possibly can that has been water-damaged. This can be anything from boxes to furniture to even the carpet. Removing these things not only makes the next parts of this process easier to deal with, but it also helps prevent the growth and spread of mold.

Clean the Area to Remove Mold

This is probably the most important part of the entire process. Cleaning up mold is more than just buying bleach and trying to scrub everything. Professionals are going to have industry-standard cleaners that will effectively kill mold and prevent it from spreading through your home. They’re also going to have the proper cleaning tools to keep you and your family safe.

Remove Any Remaining Moisture

After the mold has been cleaned out, any remaining moisture has to be removed from the area. This usually involves running a dehumidifier that will suck the moisture out of the area, drying it out. This does a couple of things.

First, it makes it easier to make any necessary repairs to the area since you won’t have to deal with soggy drywall. Also, this helps kill any remaining mold spores in the area. Since they thrive on moisture, removing that moisture from the area prevents mold from growing and spreading.

Begin Repairs on Your Home

Once these other steps are complete, you can now begin the process of making repairs to your home. Get new drywall. Replace the carpets. Whatever you need to do, you can now fix your home with minimal hassle.

We had an incredible experience with PNW Restoration after discovering water damage in our home. They were incredibly responsive, arriving at our house within a few short hours. As it was our first time dealing with a flood, we were grateful for their thorough approach. Bryan Becker, the Project Manager, and Nick Peterson, the Lead Water Technician, took the time to walk us through the damage and explain their plan to fix it. Throughout the entire process, they clearly communicated every step, ensuring we understood everything. Their daily check-ins were reassuring, and their over-communication, kept us informed and at ease. They even provided invaluable support during the frustrating insurance claim process. We highly recommend PNW Restoration for their professionalism, responsiveness, and excellent customer service. Thank you, Bryan and Nick, for making a stressful situation much more manageable!

Fast and comprehensive mitigation response. Jakeb is caring and responsive. Kylie and Nick doing the work were professional and friendly while working hard. Restoration has been a little more difficult with scheduling and less than reliable subcontractors.

A recent small leak in a bathroom pipe has turned into a major restoration project. We were referred to PNW Restoration and I am so glad we were. Jakeb Shelton the project manager contacted us immediately and answered all our questions (we are novices) about what to expect from our insurance company and the project. He is handling contact with the insurance adjuster, saving us a multitude of headaches. Every one of the PNW employees who have worked on the demolition phase of our project (Kylie, Nick, Wade, Brett and all the others whose names I can't recall) have been polite, accommodating and unbelievably hard workers. Every question we have asked, no matter how minor, has been answered immediately and satisfactorily. The project continues into the rebuild phase and I am confident the employees we will work with in the future will be just as great. I cannot recommend PNW Restoration more highly. Awesome, awesome customer service, too!

Jake was the project manager and helped take care of a sewer line issue I was having. Brett, Kylie, and Noe came and did a tremendous job making sure all of my furniture and hardwood flooring was covered and took care of doing new vapor barrier and insulation and water cleanup under my house with little room to work in. They were flexible on timing and made sure cleanup was done well!

PNW Restoration came to my rescue after a water damage event required the removal and demolition of my entire kitchen down to the subfloor. Jake was my remediation project manager and his team, especially Wade, Brett, and Matthew were amazing! Everyone has been extremely responsive, helpful, tidy, fun, and supportive during a very stressful time, all while helping me with my insurance company. They are a great company and willing to go above and beyond. They’ve provided all the guidance and care that you could ask for and I look forward to working with them to get the kitchen back up and running.

We really appreciate the work that PNW team did when we had major water damage from our attic, 2 floors and the crawl space. They were all extremely professional, always gave me a call to make sure that someone would be home when they came, and they respected the house and space when they were in it. They also outsourced some stuff and made sure those teams also represented them well. In all, PNW team were genuinely wonderful people and made one of the hardest periods of our life, manageable.
