Portland Water Damage: Solutions for Our Climate’s Challenges

Summarize with

Water damage is common during the winter season due to bursting pipes and melting snow. When it happens, you need to call a company that specializes in Portland water damage.

As we greet the winter season, you may be preparing for lots of things. However, is one of those things what you’ll do if you encounter Portland water damage? Water damage is just as big a threat during the winter season as it is at any other time of year.

In this article, we cover the common causes of Portland water damage and the solutions you should take if and when it happens.

What Causes Portland Water Damage in the Winter?

We often believe that water damage is a summer problem. However, it can occur just as often during the winter months.

These are the most common causes of water damage during the winter season:

  • Burst, frozen pipes
  • Clogged drains
  • Rainstorms
  • Melting snow
  • Broken or old water heaters
  • Clogged gutters

If you encounter any of these issues and have water damage as a result, then you need to have the number of a Portland water damage company on hand. The longer any type of water damage sits, the more likely mold is to grow. This is because mold grows in as little as 24 hours after water exposure.

Now that we’ve covered what causes water damage in the winter season, let’s take a look at what the solutions are for dealing with it.

Solutions for Water Damage

If you encounter water damage this winter season, don’t panic. There are some steps you can take to find a solution. Here’s an overview of those steps:

Stop the Leak

If the situation allows, try to do what you can to either stop the leak or show proof that you tried to reduce the damage it’s causing. For example, if you have a ceiling leak, then try and put buckets beneath the leak to catch the water.

Doing so is beneficial for several reasons. First, it shows the insurance company that you’re taking quick action to remedy the situation. This will serve as evidence when you go to file a claim.

Second, taking quick action like this can help prevent the damage from getting worse.

Dry Up the Water

If the water damage is minimal, then do what you can to blot it up. Make sure you dry the area fully. As briefly mentioned above, mold can develop in as little as 24 hours. Even if the water damage is minor, mold can – and will – still grow.

After you blot up the water, make sure to open a door or window to get a cross-breeze. This cross-breeze will help dry the area out more.

Plug in a Dehumidifier

If you have a dehumidifier, then go ahead and plug it in after the water is gone. Water damage brings moisture that will sit in the air and foster mold growth. To combat this, try a dehumidifier. This will grab any excess moisture.

Call a Water Damage Restoration Company

In terms of what can offer you the best solution for treating water damage, the answer is hiring a professional.

With a professional, you can treat water damage caused by everything from burst pipes to floods. Upon scheduling a consultation, they’ll first come out to conduct an assessment of the damage. This gives your tech a chance to determine what kind of water damage it is and what treatment method is recommended.

Once that is determined, then your tech will remove the water from your premises and fully dry out the area. Once the affected area is dried, it will be disinfected so germs don’t spread.

How Long Does the Water Damage Remediation Process Take?

On average, it can take a few days to a few weeks to complete. This time frame depends on the severity of the water damage and the size of the room. Also, if multiple rooms were affected, the remediation process is going to take longer.

We had an incredible experience with PNW Restoration after discovering water damage in our home. They were incredibly responsive, arriving at our house within a few short hours. As it was our first time dealing with a flood, we were grateful for their thorough approach. Bryan Becker, the Project Manager, and Nick Peterson, the Lead Water Technician, took the time to walk us through the damage and explain their plan to fix it. Throughout the entire process, they clearly communicated every step, ensuring we understood everything. Their daily check-ins were reassuring, and their over-communication, kept us informed and at ease. They even provided invaluable support during the frustrating insurance claim process. We highly recommend PNW Restoration for their professionalism, responsiveness, and excellent customer service. Thank you, Bryan and Nick, for making a stressful situation much more manageable!

Fast and comprehensive mitigation response. Jakeb is caring and responsive. Kylie and Nick doing the work were professional and friendly while working hard. Restoration has been a little more difficult with scheduling and less than reliable subcontractors.

A recent small leak in a bathroom pipe has turned into a major restoration project. We were referred to PNW Restoration and I am so glad we were. Jakeb Shelton the project manager contacted us immediately and answered all our questions (we are novices) about what to expect from our insurance company and the project. He is handling contact with the insurance adjuster, saving us a multitude of headaches. Every one of the PNW employees who have worked on the demolition phase of our project (Kylie, Nick, Wade, Brett and all the others whose names I can't recall) have been polite, accommodating and unbelievably hard workers. Every question we have asked, no matter how minor, has been answered immediately and satisfactorily. The project continues into the rebuild phase and I am confident the employees we will work with in the future will be just as great. I cannot recommend PNW Restoration more highly. Awesome, awesome customer service, too!

Jake was the project manager and helped take care of a sewer line issue I was having. Brett, Kylie, and Noe came and did a tremendous job making sure all of my furniture and hardwood flooring was covered and took care of doing new vapor barrier and insulation and water cleanup under my house with little room to work in. They were flexible on timing and made sure cleanup was done well!

PNW Restoration came to my rescue after a water damage event required the removal and demolition of my entire kitchen down to the subfloor. Jake was my remediation project manager and his team, especially Wade, Brett, and Matthew were amazing! Everyone has been extremely responsive, helpful, tidy, fun, and supportive during a very stressful time, all while helping me with my insurance company. They are a great company and willing to go above and beyond. They’ve provided all the guidance and care that you could ask for and I look forward to working with them to get the kitchen back up and running.

We really appreciate the work that PNW team did when we had major water damage from our attic, 2 floors and the crawl space. They were all extremely professional, always gave me a call to make sure that someone would be home when they came, and they respected the house and space when they were in it. They also outsourced some stuff and made sure those teams also represented them well. In all, PNW team were genuinely wonderful people and made one of the hardest periods of our life, manageable.
