Can Damage From a Flood Really Be Repaired?

Summarize with

If your home was damaged in a flood, a flood restoration company can come out to remove water and disinfect it so it's ready for repairs.

Can you repair flood damage? The answer is that it depends. Though a flood restoration company helps mitigate the damage, some upholstered items may be unsalvageable. Here’s everything you need to know about flood damage:

Common Causes of Floods

Floods are generally natural disasters. Depending on the situation, floods are the result of:

  • River flooding
  • Tropical storms/storm surges
  • Levee failures/dam breaks

Though these can happen, flash floods are one of the most common. A flash flood is typically the result of heavy rainfall, which in Portland is very common.

Unfortunately, a flash flood can be difficult to prepare for because of how quickly it happens. However, if you do receive a flood warning, there are a few steps you can take to mitigate the severity of damage to your home:

  1. Shut off all the electricity. Remember, water and electricity don’t mix. Turning this off will ensure your safety when you re-enter your home. If you have ample warning, you should label all of your fuses and circuit breakers just in case.
  2. Move/cover upholstered or expensive furniture beforehand. If you have time, try to move expensive, upholstered furniture somewhere the flood won’t get to, such as your second floor. Or if you can, try to keep valuables on a counter or somewhere safe. The more things there are on the floor, the less likely it is you’ll be able to salvage them once the flood is over.
  3. Use sandbags to protect your home. Sandbags work as a barrier against water, so they can help reduce the amount of water that gets inside your home.
  4. Learn more about your insurance coverage. Making repairs after a flood can be costly, especially when you have to replace your personal items. If you’re able, call your insurance company to determine if you have flood protection. If you don’t, see how you can sign up for it.

But what if you don’t have time to prepare for a flood? If a flood occurs, what should you do?

Steps to Take After a Flood

After a flood, you should first make sure it’s safe to re-enter your home if you evacuated. If you were able to turn off the electricity beforehand, you should be fine. However, if you weren’t, wear the proper protective gear before you re-enter. Your protective gear should include rubber gloves, a face mask, eye goggles, and rubber boots. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this or the flood is too severe to handle yourself, call an electrician for help.

Your next call should be to a professional flood restoration company. Little leaks are easy to take care of yourself, but a flood is another animal. Your flood repair team will remove the water from your home safely and effectively. Then, they will use a dehumidifier to grab excess moisture from the air to prevent mold. Unfortunately, mold grows in as little as 24-48 hours after water exposure. The sooner you remove water and moisture from your home, the less likely it is that mold will grow.

In addition to drying out your home, professionals will disinfect the area, too. Floodwaters are hazardous because they contain human and animal waste, chemicals, and other types of bacteria. With proper disinfecting, your flood restoration team will protect you and your family against sickness.

Salvageable Items After a Flood

Repairing items will depend on the severity of the damage they incurred. However, in most cases, the following items can typically be salvaged after a flood:

  • Household appliances
  • Drywall
  • Floorboards

Items That (Usually) Can’t Be Salvaged After a Flood

Unfortunately, some items are much more challenging to save after a flood, such as:

  • Electronic devices
  • Paper products
  • Artwork
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Veneered furniture

Why Flood Restoration?

We had an incredible experience with PNW Restoration after discovering water damage in our home. They were incredibly responsive, arriving at our house within a few short hours. As it was our first time dealing with a flood, we were grateful for their thorough approach. Bryan Becker, the Project Manager, and Nick Peterson, the Lead Water Technician, took the time to walk us through the damage and explain their plan to fix it. Throughout the entire process, they clearly communicated every step, ensuring we understood everything. Their daily check-ins were reassuring, and their over-communication, kept us informed and at ease. They even provided invaluable support during the frustrating insurance claim process. We highly recommend PNW Restoration for their professionalism, responsiveness, and excellent customer service. Thank you, Bryan and Nick, for making a stressful situation much more manageable!

Fast and comprehensive mitigation response. Jakeb is caring and responsive. Kylie and Nick doing the work were professional and friendly while working hard. Restoration has been a little more difficult with scheduling and less than reliable subcontractors.

A recent small leak in a bathroom pipe has turned into a major restoration project. We were referred to PNW Restoration and I am so glad we were. Jakeb Shelton the project manager contacted us immediately and answered all our questions (we are novices) about what to expect from our insurance company and the project. He is handling contact with the insurance adjuster, saving us a multitude of headaches. Every one of the PNW employees who have worked on the demolition phase of our project (Kylie, Nick, Wade, Brett and all the others whose names I can't recall) have been polite, accommodating and unbelievably hard workers. Every question we have asked, no matter how minor, has been answered immediately and satisfactorily. The project continues into the rebuild phase and I am confident the employees we will work with in the future will be just as great. I cannot recommend PNW Restoration more highly. Awesome, awesome customer service, too!

Jake was the project manager and helped take care of a sewer line issue I was having. Brett, Kylie, and Noe came and did a tremendous job making sure all of my furniture and hardwood flooring was covered and took care of doing new vapor barrier and insulation and water cleanup under my house with little room to work in. They were flexible on timing and made sure cleanup was done well!

PNW Restoration came to my rescue after a water damage event required the removal and demolition of my entire kitchen down to the subfloor. Jake was my remediation project manager and his team, especially Wade, Brett, and Matthew were amazing! Everyone has been extremely responsive, helpful, tidy, fun, and supportive during a very stressful time, all while helping me with my insurance company. They are a great company and willing to go above and beyond. They’ve provided all the guidance and care that you could ask for and I look forward to working with them to get the kitchen back up and running.

We really appreciate the work that PNW team did when we had major water damage from our attic, 2 floors and the crawl space. They were all extremely professional, always gave me a call to make sure that someone would be home when they came, and they respected the house and space when they were in it. They also outsourced some stuff and made sure those teams also represented them well. In all, PNW team were genuinely wonderful people and made one of the hardest periods of our life, manageable.
